Another important piece of news regarding taxation of individuals in Romania as of January 1, 2022: pensions are subject to health insurance contribution starting this year.

In the same time with the decision to increase the state paid pensions starting with January 1, 2022, the Romanian government also decided to eliminate the exemption from paying health insurance contribution for pensions that exceed the value of 4,000 lei per month.

More specifically, through the same Ordinance published in the Official Gazette on December 18, 2021 (GEO 130/2021) by which numerous amendments were made to the Romanian Tax Code, the Romanian authorities also eliminated from the tax law the exemption of pension income from the health insurance contribution.
