The Romanian National Committee for Emergency Situations decided yesterday to extend the state of alert status by additional 30 days, starting with October 15. The Committee also decided additional measures that will be applied against the recent alarming increase in the number of COVID-19 infections.

Thus, the most important measures that were announced are:

  • private events, such as weddings, baptisms, festive meals, both in open or closed spaces will be prohibited nationwide; baptism and church weddings will be allowed only in the presence of up to 16 people; only when the situation of infections number improves, will these events be allowed again;
  • the protective mask must be worn everywhere in open spaces (including pedestrian areas, waiting areas) in the cities where the incidence of cases is above 3 per thousand; it must be worn only in crowded areas where the incidence of cases is below 3 per thousand;
  • theaters, cinemas, restaurants, and cafes are allowed to open, but capacity will be reduced to: 50% where the infection rate is less than or equal to 1.5 per thousand inhabitants, 30% where the infection rate is between 1.5 and 3 per thousand (scheduled only until 23:00), and where the infection rate exceeds 3 per thousand, they will be completely closed.

The Committee also updated the list of countries in the “yellow zone” for which travel restrictions apply. The number of countries on the list was reduced and it now includes only countries with a higher incidence rate than Romania. Thus, some countries such as Austria, Denmark, Hungary and Ukraine were removed from the list, for example.

Also, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis stated in a press conference of yesterday evening, that at present it is not necessary to decree the state of emergency on the Romanian territory.
